FEMA Independent Study Program Courses
Nassau County ARES encourages its members to take advantage of training opportunities relevant to the support of the ARES mission.
To be classified as ACTIVE (deployable), members should successfully complete the ARRL’s EC-001 course.
To remain deployable, NCARES members are asked to complete the FEMA/EMI Independent Study Program Courses: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
Nassau Co ARES would LIKE all members to be working on completing these courses.
In addition, those using police radios must have completed CJIS level 2 certification and renew every two years.
Nassau Co Sheriff’s office background check / clearances are also required for all shelter personnel and for personnel working in the EOC. Any other ARES member WISHING to get background check (and the Nassau Sheriff’s Office ID ) are welcome to submit paperwork.
ARRL Emergency Communications Courses
EC-001 (Intro to Emergency Communications)
Introduction to Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. A basic course to raise awareness and provide fundamental knowledge and tools for any emergency communications volunteer. This course has 29 lesson units and is expected to take approximately 45 hours to complete over a 9-week period.

FEMA Independent Study Program Courses
IS-100.C – Introduction to Incident Command System
Introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
IS-200.C – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
ICS 200.a is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). It provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS.
IS-700.B – National Incident Management System (NIMS)
NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and non-governmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.
IS-800.C – National Response Framework, An Introduction
This course introduces participants to the concepts and principles of the National Response Framework.
