Get your FRN NOW so you don’t forget
You MUST have an FRN to complete the NC605 form before the test. Get it here: https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do. I’ll give you the form in the second week.
Here is my favorite Practice app
https://hamstudy.org. I encourage everyone to be doing practice tests starting after the 2nd week of class. Yes, there will be loads of questions you can’t answer, but you’ll still learn a lot just seeing the words!
Callsign lookup
Not sure someone is actually a HAM? Fact check ’em at: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchLicense.jsp
This is where you will magically appear when you pay the FCC for your own license
Grid square lookup
https://haminfo.tetranz.com/map. There are MANY of these sites, but what makes this one the coolest (IMHO) is the number of ways you can look up a grid square. Sure, street address and zip code are fun, but try call sign too!
Your First Radio?
There are many HAMs that will denigrate Chinese radios, but how good does it need to be if it costs just $25 and has passed FCC testing? Sure, it might not be the very best or coolest radio, but they do the job, and if you want something better later… make this one your spare!
Learn by Listening
Once you have a radio, and way before knowing how to set it up to transmit, you can listen to other HAMs and piggyback on their real-world demonstrations. Mostly that will be good, but maybe sometimes not, and that’s good education too.
